Hey, dougie; I'm from the straight pipe gang back in the '50's and '60's. We used to use anything available that would slip over or clamp on. One guy even used an old drive shaft housing he got in a junkyard from one of those cars that did not have the floating drive shaft, you know the tapered kind? Never once heard of valve problems from any of those homemade things. Try a hole or two and see how it runs, might have to enrich the carb proportionately.
